Imagine living in a small, mixed-income intentional "neighborhood" which is designed for personal privacy, yet offers some shared space, and ways for you to share parts of your life with neighbors who really care about you.

Process for Eligibility to Become a Member of ElderSpirit Community

The process for eligibility to become a member of ElderSpirit Community at Trailview is based on person(s) becoming acquainted with the mission and values of the community. We hope to provide enough information to help you determine if this living situation fits with your own values and life style.

1. Review the materials about ElderSpirit Community at Trailview included on this Website. Notice especially this page titled “Process for Becoming Eligible for Membership” and read this document as well as other documents that you can reach via links as listed below:

Mission and Values
Late Life Spirituality
Consensus Decision Making
Goodness of Fit Questionnaire
Financial Information

2. If you are interested in continuing the process after your review, please contact Dene Peterson, preferably by email at denepeterson@elderspirit.org to go on to the next step.  If you are unable to use email you may write to Dene at 102 ElderSpirit Court, Abingdon, VA 24210.  She will set up a time for you to visit and have a tour and an introductory conversation with members of the Membership Committee.  The conversation will be an opportunity to ask questions and get better acquainted.  At present the tours and conversations are conducted on the Wednesday before the 2nd Thursday of the month.  That is because our members' meeting is held at 4:00 pm on that Thursday, and we would like you to observe this meeting.  We want you to understand as much as possible about the realities of living in ElderSpirit Community.  If after careful deliberation you would like to continue you may request a form with questions for discernment.

3. Fill out the form and return it to Betty Keely, 194 Highland St., Abingdon, VA 24210. After the committee has reviewed your statement, the members who met with you at the time of your visit will make arrangements for an interview with you which may be by phone. The purpose of this interview is to answer any questions you or we may have before your name goes on the waiting list.

4. If you wish to get on the waiting list to rent a unit, you need to request a rental application from the company that manages the rentals, American Apartment Management Co. Inc. located in Knoxville, TN.  Rental applications are obtained from and submitted to their local manager, Denise Nelsen, whose office is located in the Elderspirit Community Common House. Email her at
denise.nelsen@aamci.com and she will send the application to you. After you complete the application and return it to her, your name will be put on the rental waiting list.

If you wish to purchase a home, complete steps 1-3 and your name will go on that list. When a home becomes available you will be notified. You can choose to be on both lists.
